In this article, I will explain in detail how to resize presentation slides correctly, and what problems you might encounter at each step, and how you can avoid them.

First, let's figure out what slide size is in PowerPoint. When people say "size" they usually mean millimeters, centimeters, or pixels. Actually more important for preparing a presentation is the aspect ratio of the slide in PowerPoint. Any slide can be stretched or compressed, but only if the proportions of the slide are maintained, the image will not be distorted, and the quality will not deteriorate. Here it is necessary to make a reservation: if in your presentation you use low quality raster images (for example, photographs), then such images will lose quality if the slide is enlarged proportionally in any case. Print from PowerPoint

The ability to print a presentation is available in all versions of PowerPoint. But in the new versions, the possibilities have expanded significantly: you can print presentation slides, separately pages of notes, the structure of the presentation (with a hierarchy into sections and subsections), print several slide thumbnails on one sheet. You will find all the possibilities in the tab File > Print.

Let's take a closer look at printing from PowerPoint on an office printer of presentation slides.

The slides must match the size of the printed sheet. I wrote about this in detail above in How to resize a slide in PowerPoint.
Go to the tab File > Print> Setting.
Click on item "Print all slides" and Full page slides. Be sure to check "Fit to sheet size" in this case, PowerPoint will automatically resize your slide to fit the printed sheet. Attention! If the format of your slide differs greatly from the format of the printed sheet, the function « Fit to sheet size " can distort your slides.

Important: If you are using an office printer to print the handout of your presentation, consider the following restrictions:

An office printer cannot print the entire surface of a sheet, there are always margins on the sides, so it is not recommended to use templates with a colored background, and significant elements should not fall into the margins. Borderless PowerPoint printing is not possible with a regular office printer.
If you are using a black and white printer, try to use black (not gray) for your text, it will be clearer and easier to read. Do not use many colors and shades, they will all be gray when printed.
Pay special attention to charts and graphs, do not use color differentiation. All graphical representations of data should be duplicated with text.

Maximum PowerPoint Presentation Size

If you are using PowerPoint to create posters, the maximum size allowed may become important to you. The maximum size of a PowerPoint presentation in newer versions cannot exceed 56 inches, which is a little over 140 cm. But in fact, you can have posters of any size. The only requirement is to maintain the aspect ratio.

Design your poster in a smaller size but with the same aspect ratio.
Save the PowerPoint file as EPS or PDF. These formats are vector-based and maintain quality by increasing their size. Try to avoid using poor quality bitmaps.
Open a PDF or EPS file in Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Photoshop and select Image Size from " Image»Menu.
Scale up the image to the size you need.
Save in TIFF format. This format is suitable for printing a poster in a printing house.

You can also use the print to scale feature. In the print dialog box, check the box next to "Fit to sheet size"(you will find this option in the section "Seal").

I told you about a versatile way to print very large posters created in PowerPoint. More often, however, you may need to resize your PowerPoint slide to a standard paper size. How do I change the orientation of one slide in PowerPoint?

You cannot rotate a single slide in PowerPoint. Largely due to the fact that the presentation is viewed as a whole. If you need to use several slide formats within one presentation, you will have to create separate presentation files, or combine ready-made and exported slides (PDF, JPG) together.

Last week, I checked in at a nice hotel. Close to the reception desk, there was a big television screen mounted to the wall. It played an hotel promotion video showing the rooms, facilities, restaurants etc. A wide-screen or typical 16: 9 movie on a typical television screen. One like you see so many at hotels and shopping malls.

During the day I had a business meeting and when I arrived back at the hotel in the evening, I immediately noticed that the professional video playback was replaced by a simple PowerPoint slideshow. The presentation welcomed a specific company to the bar of the hotel, for a kind of reception or celebration of something. The contrast between that initial video and now this PowerPoint presentation, could not have been bigger.

First of all was this PowerPoint, that was set up like so many people do with PowerPoint. They use PowerPoint like Microsoft Word. Start with an empty white sheet, add a title, add some text as bullets and optionally, insert a picture to the right of it. 70% of the PowerPoint presentations are built like that.
The second problem that I noticed, was a professional earthquake. The slideshow was set up as a standard size of 4: 3 on a wide screen 16: 9 television screen. You recognize this problem when you see those black bars at the left and at the right of the slideshow, in order to equally center the slideshow on the larger screen or resolution.

The first problem can be fixed by investing in a professional PowerPoint design agency or freelancer. Let them set up a PowerPoint template with your logo, a given font, your style and so on. Force everyone in your company to start with this template. It is so much easier to start off with a good template. Don’t trust yourself with the promise that the white presentation will be enhanced later on when you have time. Don’t fool yourself. The second problem can be easily fixed. When you start with a new presentation, you will first have to know; what is the aspect ratio of the device where I will show my slideshow or presentation? When you don’t know the aspect ratio, don’t start with the presentation. Changing the aspect ratio after the design of the presentation, could easily ruin your design.
There are two commonly used aspect ratio's:

PowerPoint followed this evolution. From the beginning, a new PowerPoint presentation was created with a 4: 3 slide setup. Since PowerPoint 2013, a new presentation is now created with 16: 9 slides. So when people are still using PowerPoint 2010 nowadays, they tend to always create 4: 3 presentations, for playback on the recent 16: 9 television screens. People still use PowerPoint 2010 while you can't buy 4: 3 monitors anymore. This results in the slide show aspect ratio problem, as I experienced at this hotel. So as an AV professional, let me teach the 2 things that the user should know before start typing the first words on the slides... Both are related to the device where the user will run the slideshow:

Check the orientation of the screen. Most common orientation is landscape like a television screen. But there are exceptions; at shopping malls, airports and exhibition halls, the user often see television screens in portrait mode.
Know the resolution of the playback device and see if it is a standard monitor or wide-screen monitor.

When the user knew the orientation and size of the playback device, the user can start with the presentation. In PowerPoint, click File, New, Blank presentation from the menu. Then click the Design tab and click on the Slide Size button.

After that, get the slide size property form.

Here the user can choose between a portrait or landscape orientation and set the width in pixels or inches or centimeters. Now with these correct settings, you can add slides and add your messages. Remember not to start with those empty white slides like in a Microsoft Word document and be creative. Good luck ...

What are the pixel dimensions of the presentation slide?

I have a hard time trying to get it right. I keep guessing and checking and it takes too long. I googled some of the results and they are also a little crazy.

Another problem is that I am using the .opd format; proprietary format for opening office / libre office in windows 7.

I'm just trying to create a decent background for my presentation.

I regularly create Powerpoint templates for clients.

I use RGB / 1504px x 1129px or 20.889 "x 15.681" / 72ppi jpg or png files for full page backgrounds in PowerPoint. This image size will cover the entire slide. Anything smaller should be scaled to fit the slide.

I just post what I use every day. I understand that it may not fit the screen, but this maximum size Powerpoint slide. How the Powerpoint shrinks and twists to fit the screen is somewhat irrelevant. This is the size of the full slide.

PowerPoint and Impress slides are specified in inches or centimeters, not pixels, and these real units are somewhat arbitrary given that presentations are usually scaled proportionally to fit whatever screen they are shown on. (Or disproportionately if something is misconfigured on the screen)

I would choose an image that is large enough in pixels for whatever screen you can display it on; just scale it proportionally to fill the background.

But for best results, try to match the aspect ratio of the presentation itself to the screen you intend to use. PowerPoint (until at least 2003) and Impress (latest mid-2011) slides with "screen show size" default to 4: 3, which is too high for today's widescreen screens. In PowerPoint 2010 (and maybe 2007?) You have 4: 3, 16: 9, 16:10 choices.

It occurs to me that I'm probably in the minority of people on this site who remember when the Powerpoint output was the actual slides - the kind of movie. These were projectors with carousels on top, and even remotes remote control and autocorrect used analog signals - Neolithic Powerpoints.

The reason everyone is TOTALLY confused is because Powerpoint uses 72 POI (28.346 cm) and NOT PIXELS. This works with older printing standards. if you take a standard document size of 960x720 25.4cm x 19.05cm and do the math it doesn't work and oddly enough the amount it goes is EXACTLY the ratio of standard dots (used in font sizes) to pixels for example: 36pt = 48px (this is not EXACT ratio, but enough for this)

So take dots per 28.346 cm * width at 25.4 cm should = 960 but really = 720. Divide that by 36 and times 48 and WOOHOO we get the actual 960 pixels!

Powerpoint operates in a completely different unit than pixels, so if you look at the standard presentation.xml in the .pptx file, you see this line that defines the standard slide size: p: sldSz type = "screen4x3" cy = "6858000" cx = "9144000" /

This size 9144000x6858000 is the default 960x720 pixel template. (25.4 cm x 19.05 cm)

if you take out your calculator, you can understand that the 1280x720 template requires you to edit the XML file like this: p: sldSz type = "screen4x3" cy = "6858000" cx = "12192000" /

You can do this by right clicking on the .pptx and opening it with winrar;)

Alternatively just use 33.86cm x 19.05cm ... it's much faster: D

For 1920 x 1080 use 50.8 cm x 28.575 cm

PPT standard representation: 2200X1650. Image resolution: 220. I got this size by creating a rectangle with slide size in my presentation> save as JPG. I am pasting it in PPT and it was too small. I read that the default PPT resolution is 220, so I resized my photo in Photoshop from 150 dpi to 220 dpi and got the exact size. Can it be heavy so you can use the 1500X? (I don't remember, but keep it proportional) - Keep PPT by default and stretch to PPT.

Try it: page size 50.80cm x 28.57cm. This seems to work for me so far. I created a Full HD JPEG in Photoshop (1920x1080 pixels @ 72 dpi ppi). Then I created a new Impress presentation. Right click on the page and type: slide> page settings.

At first I tried 16 cm high and 9 cm high and then doubled each one in turn until I reached the maximum possible size in cm (300 cm is the largest, so it ended up being 256 cm × 144 cm), but when I inserted the JPEG in Full HD the image was really small. so I chose the original size and it was still very small. So I examined the JPEG size with right click and it was 50.80cm x 28.57cm) like this: resized the page to 50.80cm x 28.57cm.

Then I inserted a picture. (right click> position & size and play with the settings a bit. That is: position x at 0 cm and y at 0 cm, but then the image should fit perfectly).

I haven't tested this as a presentation yet, but so far it seems to work.

PCs use a base resolution of 96 ppi. Mac uses 72 ppi.

The traditional PPT slide was 10 "x 7.5" on a PC, for a total of 960x720 pixels.

PowerPoint will now allow you to increase the resolution of your images. However, when displayed, images and fonts are displayed at a screen resolution that can be set by your monitor or presentation switcher.

This is all very confusing.

So, if your goal is HD - then 1920x1080 is great. If you don't know, 150 ppi is great for screen and desktop printing.

By the way, PNG images have great advantages in ppt. You can use Photoshop or Illustrator to export them. They compress to PPT and print great and allow transparent backgrounds. If you are old-fashioned and have built huge decks, you know that JPEGs can cause all sorts of problems.

The DPI resolution on the screen is pretty pointless.

The de facto standard has recently become the widescreen format in film production. Manufacturers of modern laptops and monitors also adhere to these standards.
